Established five years ago, Black Box Dance Company is Denmark’s third largest professional dance company, and its only professional company outside of Copenhagen.
Housed in Black Box Theatre, Holstebro, Black Box Dance Company consists of exceptional early-career professional dancers from all over Europe. In 2017, over 900 people from all over the world applied to join the company.
Black Box has been twice nominated for the Danish theatre award Reumert. Its strong team of dancers have toured across Denmark, China, Brazil, Cyprus, Tanzania, Spain, Sweden, Finland and Hungary. They have partnered with a vast variety of organisations globally, including Dantzaz (Spain), Muda Africa (Tanzania), and Shanghai International Arts Festival.
Under the artistic leadership of Marie Brolin-Tani, Black Box’s aim is to promote dance both nationally and internationally. In just a few years, the company has marked itself as one of the country’s leading players in the industry, putting on both large and small scale performances for both young and adult audiences.
Belgian-born choreographer Jason Mabana studied at Rambert School and furthered his training at London Contemporary Dance School. He has worked for companies such as Akram Khan Company, Candoco Dance Company, Company Wayne McGregor and Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company.
NO SEX – a world of gender was nominated for 2019 Best Performance in Denmark. Jason has choreographed for BBC’s Young Dancer and recently created Requiem For Aleppo, which premiered at Sadler’s Wells and was nominated for the Amnesty International Freedom of Speech Award. He has also created work for Balettakademien (Sweden), BalletBoyz, Stella McCartney, Springboard Festival (Canada), Dance Waves Festival (Cyprus), and more.
Jason currently teaches at Rambert School and Royal Ballet School in London, and has been guest teacher at Academie Voor Theater en Dans in Amsterdam and Contemporary Dance School Hamburg.
