NSCD alumna Roberta Jean was recently announced as the winner of this year's Bonnie Bird Choreographic Development Award at a ceremony in Leeds.
Roberta receives £2000 to help develop her practice as well as a programme of activities to support her research, collaborative work and professional partnerships.
Roberta won the Choreographic Development Award alongside fellow artists Julie Cunningham, Grace Nicol and Charlotte Spencer. Sue MacLennan won the Lifetime Contribution to Choreography Award, while Janine Harrington was the New Choreography Award winner.
The Bonnie Bird Award ceremony took place on Thursday 13 February at Phoenix Dance Theatre, the first time it has been hosted outside of London.
Roberta is a choreographer, director, singer and teacher who creates film works and live performances. After graduating from NSCD with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance she completed an MA in Performance Making at Goldsmiths.
In 2019 Roberta was selected as a finalist at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival, Screen.dance and New Renaissance Film Festival. She was nominated for the Total Theatre & The Place Dance Award in 2018.
Roberta has been artist in residence at Critical Path Laboratory, Australia as well as Dance Limerick, Dance City, Dance Base, Dance4 and Dartington. She has presented work as part of the Made in Scotland Showcase and Tanzmesse festival in Düsseldorf, and at Sadler’s Wells, Nottdance, Greenwich dance and Tramway Glasgow among others.
