Dancers from second and third-year degree programme joined musicians from Leeds College of Music, animators from Leeds College of Art and VJ Oscar Barany, for a Light Night spectacular; We Are Universe.
This collaborative installation of improvised music, dance, digital visual art and animation, explores the relationship between the elements in the universe and the human interactions which make up our communities.
The event took place in Kirkgate Market, a new space where street food meets music providing the space for the dancers and musicians to really be creative and immersive with excited onlookers. Fran McCarthy, Head of Performance said of the dancers “We are very proud of their enthusiasm, tenacity and unbelievable energy. To say they have had little time to prepare and they didn’t quite know what to expect from the lighting show, they have delivered beyond expectation. We enjoy events where we can get amongst the crowd and we have a range of opportunities coming up which doesn’t distract them from their studies, but allows them to really connect with the public. It diversifies their learning and enables us to demonstrate what we are great at”
Internationally renowned artist and Leeds College of Music alumni, Nicolas Dixon, has been commissioned to paint the 100ft wall inside the iconic Kirkgate market. To mark the unveiling of this stunning new work on Light Night, award winning Leeds based video production company Motiv Productions will be augmenting the piece with brand new animations.
Oscar Barany is a third year student studying on the BA (Hons) Animation degree at Leeds College of Art. He has created a series of animations in abstract that are inspired by physics, geometry and colour, which will be mixed live alongside a multitude of different musicians. He uses audio reaction technology live to create a synthesis between the work and the musicians that are performing.
