Lea Anderson is co-founder and Artistic Director of The Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs, renowned for their pioneering work in non-theatrical spaces. Notable works include Flag (1988/2006/2007), Flesh and Blood (1989/1997, 2010), Birthday (1992), Car (1995/96), Smithereens (1998), Yippeee!!! (2006), Russian Roulette (2008) and Ladies & Gentlemen (2014).
She wrote and presented two series of Tights, Camera, Action for Channel 4, and choreographed Todd Haynes’ feature film Velvet Goldmine. Lea’s films are studied as set texts for GCSE and A Level Dance and Performance Studies.
In 2002 Lea was awarded an MBE for her services to dance, and in 2006 received an Honorary Doctorate from Dartington College of Arts. Lea has been Regents Professor at the University of California and Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre, and holds a fellowship at The Bill Douglas Film Museum.
Lea’s recent work includes the Hand In Glove exhibition for the V&A Museum; Trying it On at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery; Los Amores de Marte y Venus, a British Council commission for Danza Contemporanea de Cuba; Laberinto, a commission for Compania Danza PUCP in Peru; and The Alien’s Guide to Dance Gone Wrong, a commission for Maiden Voyage company in Belfast.
