Who am I?

“A father of two children, I consider myself a tirelessly curious person. I come from a very traditional background, but one that has always been bathed in creativity, artistry, and literature. Leeds is now my home and alongside my passion for teaching, learning and transmitting my knowledge, I continue to develop my career as a choreographer.”

Educational Background and Expertise Supporting Curriculum Development

Amaury is a Lecturer in Dance and has an extensive background in dance performance and making. He has worked in Higher Education internationally for nearly 10 years, holding leadership roles in choreography, assessment and currently is Curriculum Lead for Creative and Contextual Studies at NSCD. Amaury holds a PGDip AltHE and is currently completing his MA in Dance Teaching and Facilitating. Amaury has contributed to reviewing and the redesign of curriculum at level 3 and level 6 and been instrumental to the review of grade descriptors and assessment processes. Amaury is responsive to environments of teaching and learning, and actively designed modules of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic, considering how technology could be integrated and used to enhance student experience. Amaury has actively looked at student choice and collaborative assessments methods through the introduction of a ‘Menu of Criteria’ for Undergraduate students and the implementation of peer observations and peer assessment strategies. Amaury has also contributed to the ethics procedures and committees at NSCD and sits on the Board of Governors.

Supporting Students Pastoral Care

  • Attendance at Student Review Board.
  • Regular student tutorials to stay connected and in conversation with students about their progress and development.
  • Liaison with Assessment Officers in support of student achievement.

Career History

Amaury Lebrun was born in France and trained at the School of American Ballet in New York, where he was chosen by Jerome Robbins for a new creation.

He has worked for various European companies as a soloist including the Ballet du Rhin, Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin and the Ballet de l’Opéra de Nice, performing works by choreographers including Maurice Béjart, George Balanchine, Nils Christe, Carolyn Carlson, Roland Petit, Hans Van Manen, John Cranko, Jose Limon, Maryse Delente and Myriam Naisy among others.

In 2000, he joined the Compañía Nacional de Danza as a principal, dancing many works by director Nacho Duato as well as works from renowned prestigious choreographers such as Jiri Kylian, Ohad Naharin, William Forsythe, Jacopo Godani, Mats Ek and Wim Vandekeybus.

From 2006 to 2016, alongside his dance and choreographic career, he taught at the Conservatoire of Higher Education in Madrid, Spain. He is often called to teach workshops and masterclasses worldwide and is a member of Nacho Duato’s foundation to stage his work around the world.

As a choreographer, Amaury has created many award-winning original works for companies including Ballet de l’Opéra de Nice, Compañía Nacional de Danza, Centro Coreografico Gallego, Ballet de la Generalitat, Phoenix Dance Theatre and Northern Ballet. His piece Left Unseen (2018), created first for Northern School of Contemporary Dance and then with Phoenix Dance Theatre in its extended version, has been widely acclaimed by critics.
