Open Call: VERVE research commissions 2021/22

Open Call: VERVE research commissions

Apply by 12 noon, 14 July 2021

OPEN CALL - now closed

VERVE Research Commissions are a paid opportunity for artists of any movement background to research their practice with VERVE, without prescribed outcome. These commissions support artists in building a relationship with the company and NSCD through a week of studio practice, bookended by bespoke support.

Each commission is tailor-made, shaped by the artist in conversation with VERVE to support their work and the development of the dancers.

Artists have the opportunity to connect with other areas of NSCD beyond VERVE, discussing their work with a range of staff overseeing artistic commissioning and development.

We welcome applications from all artists based in the UK.

VERVE is the internationally-touring postgraduate company of Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

Key Dates

14 July | Submissions close 12 noon

22 July | Interviews (online)

Spring 2022 | Residencies take place

What you receive

  • Bespoke research time in the studio with VERVE’s highly skilled dancers, minimum five days
  • Support before, during and after your residency from NSCD staff
  • Opportunity to discuss and share your practice with staff who oversee commissioning and professional development opportunities in a variety of areas.
  • A fee of £750, plus travel expenses and accommodation if needed

Who we are looking for

We are seeking two artists from this initial call – open to all UK artists

  • Those with a distinctive physical practice, based in any physical form
  • Artists at any stage of their development
  • Those interested in scaling up their practice with a larger group of dancers
  • Those interested in building a collaborative relationship with NSCD and VERVE

NSCD believes that diversity is critical to its future development. We actively encourage applications from eligible candidates regardless of sex, age, race, ethnicity, cultural background, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or belief.

We encourage applications from those we do not know, as well as those who may also have engaged with NSCD previously.

We are particularly interested in working with artists who may have a distinctive solo, duet or small group practice, interested in scaling up their work with a larger group of dancers.

How to apply

We recognise applications take time and energy.  We have therefore tailored our application process in an attempt to reduce the demand on your time. We ask for:

  • basic contact information (full name, email address and website – if you have one)
  • a statement (written or recorded)
  • your CV
  • one video link to an example of your work

Successful applicants will be invited to interview over zoom, where you you can discuss your practice and ideas with a panel. Specific feedback will be available from this stage, if requested.
