Maja has a big imagination and would LOVE to be a Rainbow Butterfly and fly all the way to the Moon! Inspired by the four stages of the lifecycle of a butterfly, this interactive children’s piece tells a story of transformation through the eyes of a child, using aerial silks painted by textiles artist Zephyr Liddell and a story book published, illustrated and written by the company.
Rainbow Butterfly takes inspiration from traditional storytelling to weave a tale using aerial circus, contortion, contemporary & Hip Hop dance.
After each performance children are invited to take part in a mini workshop using the silks, allowing them to hold on to the silks, play in the space and for parents to take pictures as well.
Suitable for: Children aged 3-6
Duration: 15 minute performance followed by 30 minute workshop
Tickets:£5
Ella Mesma began her dance journey in salsa clubs in Bristol and Leeds, which led to her performing around the world. Ella travelled to Brazil to perform in the carnival parade and discovered her passion for aerial skills while she was there. Craving a contrast in dance styles, she began to learn Breaking and moved to London to study her masters at London Contemporary Dance School.
In 2014, she founded Ella Mesma Company (EMC), with the aim of creating a space where the dancers wellbeing was a priority, and where all the styles were valued equally. EMC have received commissions from Sadler’s Wells, National Centre for Circus Arts, and Dance City. Ella has also been Associate Artist at Dance City (2017), Trinity Centre Bristol (2018), Slate World (2020), Pervasive Media Studio, and Pavilion Dance South West (2020-2021).
