Our annual Careers Week offers tools and guidance for final year BA students as they prepare to enter the profession, provided by a diverse range of guest practitioners. This year's Careers Week will take place Monday 25 - Thursday 28 March and will cover topics such as Creative Producing, Audition Preparation, understanding tax as a freelancer, delivering creative work in Primary Schools and working in Opera.
This year we are excited to open up these sessions to recent NSCD alumni (who graduated 2019 - 2023) for FREE, supporting their continuous professional development and providing them with invaluable networking opportunities.
5 spaces per session are available for alumni, offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Read on for more information and to book.
NSCD alumna Stefania is an Italian/Brazilian dance artist, performer, rehearsal director and movement director based in Leeds. During her career to date she has been fortunate to work with both emerging talents and established companies, including Gary Clarke Company, Léa Tirabasso, Pell Ensemble, Anton Lachky, Valentina Golfieri, Jamaal Burkmar (Extended Play), Douglas Thorpe (mad dogs dance theatre), Susanne Thomas (Seven Sisters Group) and Wayne McGregor.
In this session, participants will unpack the practicalities of surviving as a self-employed freelance artist.

NSCD alumnus Sean Moss has worked with several prestigious dance companies since graduating, including Jasmin Vardimon, Tom Dale , 2Faced and Joss Arnott Dance. His session will draw on his previous audition experience and focus on finding strategies to deal with challenging moments during auditions/creative processes where we might find it difficult to show the best of ourselves.
This session will also include an open Q&A about the industry, demystifying pay, what is expected in certain situations and how to maintain a healthy relationship with dance as a career; when your passion becomes your job.

Artis Foundation helps children achieve at school by incorporating performing arts throughout their learning. By linking music, drama and dance to curriculum learning, Artis creates a very different experience from your typical classroom. Based in London and founded in 2017 by Rhys Dennis and Waddah Sinada, FUBUNATION‘s vision is to create more visibility and representation for dancers of colour in contemporary dance, and to build more diverse theatre audiences.
This practical workshop focuses on their movement language, combining contact improvisation with influences of Hip Hop and African dance styles.

Kate Flatt has over 40 years’ experience as a Choreographer and Movement Director for Dance, Theatre & Opera. She was part of the original team who created the staging of RSC’s Les Miserables (1985-2019) at the Queens Theatre, which toured worldwide.
An ‘illustrated’ talk delving into the role of choreographers and movement directors in Opera, this session will cover what makes this artform unique from others, the research and preparation required for this type of work, what it can offer for performers and what the audition process is typically like, including some practical tasks and an open Q&A.

Recently announced as this year’s Sadler’s Wells Young Associates 2023/24, London-based, queer-led Tough Boys Dance Collective will lead a dynamic workshop focusing on finding high-octane, physically charged movement that feels honest and accessible to the body. Through improvisation, recurring motifs and set phrases, explore a raw, visceral movement vocabulary that flirts with ‘futile aestheticism’.

Over the past 12 years, Italian artist Tommaso has built an extensive career as a performer and more recently as a maker. Based in the UK since 2016 he has collaborated as a performer with the likes of Van Huynh Company, working as Artistic Assistant and Rehearsal Director, Tavaziva, Rob Heaslip Dance Company, Mathieu Geffré, Neus Gil Cortés, Joao Cidade and Martino Muller amongst others.
In this workshop, Tommaso will share European improvisation methodologies developed by makers such as Thomas Hauert and Salva Sanchis, challenging habitual movements and approaches.

This introduction to Creative Producing will cover the essentials of being a freelance creative producer – exploring the varied routes to becoming a creative producer, the core skills that are required, plus anecdotes from Callum’s own work with artists, organisations and festivals, including Mobius Dance, Northern Rascals and Excessive Human Collective, among others.
