We are delighted to read that Leeds has been named Best Place to Live in the North and the North East by The Sunday Times (17 March). Starting in 2013, The Sunday Times' Best Places to Live Guide has become an annual benchmark for villages, towns and cities across the UK to stake their claim to being the top spots everyone wished they lived in.
Describing our great city as "the best and buzziest city in the north" and a "true northern powerhouse" leading the way, particular focus was placed on its large and vibrant student community and thriving arts scene. Leeds is home to some of the best theatres, and public art collections to be found outside of London, in addition to its own Opera and Ballet companies. Venues including Leeds Playhouse, Leeds Grand Theatre, Leeds City Art Gallery and the Henry Moore Institute all play their role in enriching the city’s cultural landscape.
Leeds is truly a city of dance. In addition to ourselves here at NSCD – Phoenix Dance Theatre, Northern Ballet, Yorkshire Dance and RJC Dance are also based in the city. Leeds regularly hosts national and international touring dance companies and numerous artists’ collectives and studio spaces provide ample opportunity to meet potential collaborators.
Leeds is a leading international centre for learning, a hub for the arts in the North of England and a world-class sporting centre. It's also a gateway to some of the UK’s most stunning and inspiring countryside. Leeds is easily accessible, has its own international airport and is just a two-hour train ride from London and under an hour from Manchester.
Our CEO & Principal Sharon Watson MBE DL says:
“We couldn’t agree more with this ranking and are so proud to be part of this vibrant, exciting city with so much to offer. One of the most remarkable aspects of this great city is its warm and welcoming community. Just like here at Northern, students from all walks of life come together in the city, fostering creativity and an environment of acceptance, tolerance and mutual respect. Whether you're a local or an international student, you’ll feel like you belong here.”
