HONOURING THE LEGACY OF SIR ROBERT COHAN CBE

To honour and celebrate one of the true pioneers of modern and contemporary dance, we are delighted to host Sir Robert Cohan CBE: Beyond the M25  in Leeds on 7 June 2024.

In partnership with Sir Robert Cohan Dance Legacy (RCDL) and featuring Phoenix Dance Theatre, this event will celebrate the immeasurable influence and impact Cohan had on the dance world, including right here in Leeds. 

Northern School of Contemporary Dance CEO and Principal Sharon Watson MBE DL says: 

“Sir Robert Cohan played an important role in the birth of NSCD; he provided support and guidance to our founding Director and Principal Nadine Senior MBE and his inspiration and influence can be felt deeply in our school's faculty and curriculum.”

Sir Robert Cohan CBE: Beyond the M25will be held in advance of the 100th anniversary of Cohan’s birth next year and will comprise various ways to explore his influence on contemporary dance in our country.

The day will include a screening of the documentary film ‘Another Place’ by Darshan Singh Bhuller, Cohan-related practical studio-based activities, a masterclass and discussion panels.  The event will end with a reworked performance of Forest (1977) in the evening from 6pm, open to the public, performed by NSCD students and dancers from Phoenix Dance Theatre.

About Sir Robert Cohan CBE 

Born in New York in 1925, Cohan joined the Martha Graham Dance Company in 1947 and moved to London in 1968 to assume the role of founding Artistic Director of The Place and the London Contemporary Dance Theatre, consequently changing the course of British dance forever. He was a passionate advocate and ambassador for contemporary dance and worked tirelessly to develop and expand audiences for dance around the world. He nurtured multiple generations of dancers and choreographers and his works continue to inspire.
