Thursday 18th January 2018, 10:11am NSCD Alumnus Carlos Pons Guerra creates new work for Ballet Hispanico, New York

Northern School of Contemporary Dance graduate Carlos Pons Guerra has been commissioned by Ballet Hispanico to create a new work for the company, premiering on 10th April 2018 at The Joyce Theatre on Broadway.

The new work Waiting for Pepe, is an ironic comedy based on Federico Garcia Lorca’s play The House of Bernarda Alba and is inspired by the genre of Latin American soap operas, or telenovelas. The work is currently in production, and you can watch a video of the company with Carlos in action here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHy3jX62lgk

As the premiere latino dance organisation in the United States, Ballet Hispanico explores and celebrates Hispanico and Latino culture through contemporary dance and aims to break through stereotypes. Waiting for Pepe will premiere in a triple bill featuring works by internationally acclaimed female choreographer, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, and Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, with a full run during the company’s season. Last year Carlos’ dance company, DeNada Dance Theatre, was nominated for the UK Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards in the category of Best Independent Company.

DeNada’s latest work TORO, selected as ‘unmissable’ in 2018 by The Guardian Stage, is a post-colonial, queer reading of Beauty and the Beast. The dark comedy explores themes of colonisation and its effect on gender and sexuality. Funded by Arts Council England, with support from the Spanish Embassy in London, and commissioned by DanceXchange, TORO will premiere at DanceXchange, Birmingham, on 22 & 23 March and comes to Leeds’ Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre on 14th April.
