Carlos Pons Guerra is an independent choreographer and the director of DeNada Dance Theatre. His work is theatrical, highly physical and darkly humorous and often explores questions of gender and sexual identity. Since being awarded CATAPULT, Carlos’ work has toured the globe and has been the subject of the BBC documentary series, DanceWorks.
“For me, CATAPULT was an invaluable springboard into the dance profession. It was a fantastic and fruitful learning experience that allowed me to forge my first longstanding partnerships in the industry, with institutions such as Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Yorkshire Dance, and DanceXchange (where I’m currently an associate artist).
Through CATAPULT, I began working with Sarah Shead of Spin Arts, who was an excellent guide, mentor and producer. During the programme, I created my second professional work, O Maria, a Divine Comedy of Ham and Bondage, which would form part of my triple bill, Ham and Passion. Ham and Passion has since toured across the world, and received three nominations for the UK Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards. It was also featured in the recent BBC Four documentary on my work, Prejudice and Passion, part of the channel’s DanceWorks series.
Artistically, CATAPULT was hugely enriching as it allowed me to be mentored by choreographer Javier de Frutos, a relationship I still keep, and through its ‘Go See’ fund, I saw a wealth of inspiring productions across the UK. CATAPULT is definitely a milestone in my career so far.”
