2023 is already shaping up to be one to remember! Here's our list of everything to look forward to so far...

 

The Awakening

The highly anticipated opening ceremony of Leeds 2023 is set to be a true spectacle. NSCD CEO & Principal, Sharon Watson MBE has choreographed a mass participation number for the event, featuring 108 bodies of all ages and abilities, set to music of the Caribbean by Leeds Steel Band drummers. Our talented dancers from Watson Dance Project have played their part and will be performing too, alongside performances from RJC Dance, Corrine Bailey Rae, rapper Graft and Opera North.

NSCD Conference - A resilient future?

Our annual research conference is back! After a hiatus due to the pandemic we're delighted to welcome over 30 researchers across the sector, including our own staff and students, who'll present their findings and spark debate and discourse around resilience in the arts.

We're heading to Cardiff and Birmingham this month for our regional Undergraduate Experience Days. These events are the perfect opportunity to get a taste of what it's like to train on our undergraduate courses. Spaces are limited, so book fast to avoid missing out!

Community classes - Spring Term

Our Spring term of community classes for all ages and abilities starts back this month and we can't wait! Start your year as you mean to go on - last minute places available for new and returning faces.

Spring at Riley Theatre

A thrilling new season of dance awaits at Riley Theatre, with performances from Joseph Toonga, SAY, Body Politic Dance and more. Starting with a double bill from award-winning ACE Dance and Music - Unknown Realms on Saturday 4 February. Browse the season in full here.

 

Black Women in Leadership Symposium

Join us in February for two days of inspiring and insightful conversation, exploring how we can collectively increase and support diversity in leadership today.

Includes panel talks and roundtable discussions on a range of themes including health & wellbeing, allyship and creative activism, with guest speakers and contributions from individuals across the worlds of business and the arts.

VERVE Premiere

Our award-winning postgraduate company VERVE take to our Riley Theatre stage next month with three new works by invited choreographers Faye Tan (NSCD alumna), Jamaal Burkmar (NSCD alumnus) and KOR'SIA. As always, Premiere is set to sell out, so make sure to book your tickets early to avoid disappointment! Unlike previous years, the company will not be performing a Finale so this is your one and only opportunity to catch this year's company performing these works in Leeds.

Gran Bolero at Leeds' Corn Exchange

Watson Dance Project are taking over Leeds' iconic Corn Exchange in March, performing in a UK Premiere of Gran Bolero by Jesus Rubio Gamo - Spain's rising star of contemporary dance. Tickets on sale now.
