A TRIBUTE TO YMD PRESIDENT MARY OLDROYD

Wednesday 21st April 2021, 4:03pm

NSCD was deeply saddened to hear that Mary Oldroyd, the beloved president of Yorkshire Movement and Dance, has passed away at the age of 100.

Yorkshire Movement and Dance (YMD), a volunteer-led organisation offering intergenerational dance workshops and performances, was based at NSCD until 2019, and Mary was a close friend of the School for many years.

Mary was a longstanding advocate for dance, and made an incredible contribution to developing and promoting dance education across Yorkshire.

Originally known as West Riding Movement Study Group, YMD was founded in 1947. Mary joined the group in the '60s and became Treasurer in 1970, holding the position for nine years before becoming Secretary.

Early members of YMD experienced day-long workshops with pioneering guest tutors including Rudolph Laban, Lisa Ullman, Geraldine Stephenson and Arthur Stone. More than 70 years later, the group continues to offer regular workshops and creative projects with acclaimed choreographers and tutors.
