We are pleased to introduce Antonio Bukhar as course leader for our new CertHE Cultural Dance Forms. Originally from Uganda, Antonio has over 19 years’ experience working as a performer, choreographer, teacher, artistic director and community arts practitioner across Africa, Europe and Australasia.
Antonio’s artistic practice blends diverse styles including hip hop, contemporary, dancehall, breakdance, house and traditional African dances.
Antonio was Visiting Dance Scholar and guest choreographer at the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 2018 after being awarded the prestigious Pina Bausch Fellowship in 2017. He was then awarded the Caroline Plummer Fellowship from the University of Otago, to work on a project which used dance as a tool to build communities and break down barriers between community dance practice and academia.
Antonio is the co-founder of renowned dance company Tabu Flo Dance Company and the director of transglobal artist exchange platform Kuenda Productions, touring performances including Empty The Space and Twenty Fifteen across the world.
Antonio has previously been involved in numerous projects promoting social change in disadvantaged communities, including co-founding the Breakdance Project Uganda. He is director of Arts 2 Hearts, whose mission is to promote art as a mode of expression in schools and communities.
He has also worked as a member of the judging committee at the Batalo East Festival in Kamala, Uganda and as a performer/teacher at the Harare International Festival of Arts, Zimbabwe.
