Monday 23rd August 2021, 10:44am NSCD announces new Curriculum Lead for VERVE

We are pleased to announce Matteo Marfoglia as the new Curriculum Lead for VERVE, the postgraduate company of Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

An Italian dance artist, choreographer, performer and movement director, Matteo is currently an Associate Artist at National Dance Company Wales, and was Rehearsal Director for the company in 2018.  A graduate of Codarts in Rotterdam, he worked as a dancer for many years with Introdans in the Netherlands and NDCW in the UK, performing works by international choreographers including Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Roy Assaf, Alexander Ekman, and William Forsythe. Matteo is also a certified Gaga Teacher, having completed the Gaga Teacher Training in Tel Aviv under the artistic direction of Bosmat Nossan, Saar Harari, and Ohad Naharin.

Speaking of his appointment Matteo said:

"I am thrilled to take on this role with VERVE under the exceptional and visionary leadership of Northern School of Contemporary Dance. I am excited to continue to build on the legacy of the company, developing unique international dance artists that represent the future of this sector in all its diversity, vibrancy and artistry. I am looking forward to sharing my curiosity about what dance can be, how we can find new creative approaches and discover new places for it to thrive."

Sharon Watson MBE, CEO & Principal of NSCD said:

"We are excited to welcome Matteo. It was a pleasure to find someone with such depth of knowledge and creativity to support the development of VERVE. I am sure he will be a great asset, working not only to support the company but the School as a whole. His inside knowledge of the sector was a real strength and I look forward to seeing our students progress and develop as a result of his experienced and inspiring approach."

In 2017 Matteo founded his own project-based company in Cardiff. His own work has been commissioned by organisations in Wales including NDCW, Wales Millennium Centre and Rubicon Dance, as well as being presented in a number of international festivals including Altofest (Naples, IT) Vetrina della giovane danza d’autore (Ravenna, IT) Interplay/18 (Turin, IT) Teatro Fontana (Milan, IT) HangartFest (Pesaro, IT) and Valletta 18 European City of Culture (Malta).

Matteo's own research is focused on bringing contemporary dance out of traditional theatre venues and into more unconventional spaces, generating movement in response to communities and their histories.
