After eight years as Principal and Artistic Director of Northern School of Contemporary Dance we bid a fond farewell to Janet Smith MBE as she steps down from her role.
During her tenure as Principal, the School was rated Outstanding by Ofsted, secured Erasmus funding to facilitate international exchanges and received a TEF Gold rating for its teaching as a member school of the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama. In 2018, under Janet’s leadership, the School entered Arts Council England’s National Portfolio, furthering its commitment to nurturing artist and art form development.
“At the heart of Janet’s approach is a desire to listen to performers and to take an inclusive approach to dance practice and training. Her passion for developing young artists as well as her constant drive and dedication to dance, means that her reputation has never been higher. She has done a huge amount to help the School develop a meaningful relationship with the Arts Council for England, as well as being instrumental in the development of the Leeds Dance Partnership. In doing so, Janet has undoubtedly enhanced not only the School’s reputation but the position of Leeds as a vibrant place for artists to work.
Her strong leadership together with her collaborative style means that she leaves the school in great health and with clear direction.”
