We are delighted to announce the appointment of Matthew Robinson as the new Artistic Director and Programme Leader of VERVE, our prestigious Postgraduate Performance Company. Matthew trained at London Contemporary Dance School, joining Scottish Dance Theatre as an apprentice before going on to perform as a company member over many years. In his time with the company he worked with a diverse range of UK and international choreographers in the creation of new work, touring throughout Scotland and the world. In recent years he took on the responsibilities of Rehearsal Director for the company, supporting numerous choreographers and dancers in the creative process. During this time Matthew also developed his own work as an independent choreographer, creating commissioned work and researching his practice with the support of multiple partner organisations and collaborators. He has led classes and workshops across Scotland, the UK and internationally.
Matthew said of his appointment,
I am delighted to have joined NSCD as Artistic Director for Verve. We have an exciting year ahead, embarking on the creation of four works by four distinct choreographers, and working with numerous inspiring guest teachers and artists. I am thrilled to be in the studio with our wonderful dancers, and I look forward to being part of the exciting developmental journey they will go on this year. I look forward to sharing the work of the choreographers and these exciting emerging dance artists with new and existing audiences.
Janet Smith, Principal added,
Matthew brings excellent and very current professional skills and experience as a performer, choreographer and collaborative leader and is a wonderful addition to our creative staff team. His insight and generosity in nurturing young artists will ensure each young dancer is fully supported and prepared to step out into the profession. Matthew’s tenure builds on the terrific work of his predecessor, Gianluca Vincentini, who recently moved on after five years dedicated to developing VERVE.
Matthew will work with four acclaimed UK based choreographers, Carlos Pons Guerra, Matthias Sperling, Leila McMillan and James Cousins and this year’s VERVE students to present a programme of work that will premiere at Riley Theatre in February before touring in the UK and Europe.
