Teaching staff here at NSCD have put together some top tips to consider when filming your solo to ensure it stands out from the crowd.
Please note we are not expecting professional-level films and you will not be judged on your video editing or filmmaking ability.
Think about your location and use it as an opportunity to frame your content. Pick an interesting space to record your footage and think outside the box. Outdoor spaces and landscapes can add interest to your video and give you a bigger area to move around in than a cramped bedroom!
Use your space as inspiration rather than letting it limit you - how can you adapt the material to your space? How could you use your 'site' as inspiration?
Make sure the light offers a clear view of your moving body. Ideally, your light source should be behind the camera facing the dancer, rather than behind the dancer facing the camera, which can create a silhouette.
If a speaking section is required for your course application, try to be as natural as you can. It's an opportunity to let us see who you are; reading your answers doesn't give us a clear impression of your personality and character. Use bullet points to remind you what you want to say but answer honestly and in the moment so we get to see you!
