We’re delighted to announce that the Leeds Civic Trust has awarded the founding principal of Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD), Nadine Senior MBE, with the honour of a Blue Plaque. The Blue Plaque will celebrate her life’s work, continue to tell her story and how her history truly represents the people of Leeds and the city’s history.

There will be a public unveiling of the Blue Plaque in our car park, introduced by guest speakers MP Fabian Hamilton and representatives of the Leeds Civic Trust which the public are invited to from 3.35pm.

Nadine Senior MBE

Nadine Senior founded NSCD in 1985 as the first conservatoire dance school within the public sector. To this day, it remains the only provider of conservatoire level Higher Education dance training in England outside of London. Nadine established the school to give young people from all backgrounds access to the highest quality vocational dance training, following the success of her earlier teaching work at Harehills Middle School. As we remember Nadine and her educational vision, teaching and leadership, we celebrate the immense impact she has had on our industry and community. The tremendous impact of Nadine’s contribution continues to resonate. It underpins not only NSCD but Leeds as a city of dance, with Phoenix Dance Theatre, RJC Dance and many other individual artists and arts administrators indebted to, and touched by her inspiration.

NSCD alumni can now be found all over the world working across many areas of dance, sharing their passion with new generations of future dance artists. Nadine led our school until her retirement in 2001. At that time, NSCD set up an Access Programme for young people, an Undergraduate Degree programme and outreach and community provisions continue to evolve and grow. She also worked to expand our building facility and in 1998, a multimillion-pound redevelopment of the School was officially opened.
