Learner Support Tutor

Role and responsibilities:

Jane provides advice and support for students with Specific Learning Difficulties and other disabilities to help them access and succeed in their studies. She arranges for students to have initial screening and assessment for learning difficulties, as well as helping students with a disability to apply for government funding.  She provides study skills support for students including those with dyslexia, dyspraxia and autistic spectrum disorder. Jane also helps to organise any reasonable adjustments needed in teaching and assessment for students with disabilities.

Educational Background and Expertise Supporting Curriculum Development

Jane, as the learning support tutor, will play a crucial role in curriculum development by providing insights on the specific learning needs of students, particularly those requiring additional support. Her input will help ensure that the curriculum is inclusive and accessible, addressing diverse learning styles and challenges. Jane will collaborate with academic staff to recommend adjustments or accommodations within the curriculum, ensuring alignment with best practices for supporting students with disabilities or learning differences. Her oversight will contribute to creating a more equitable learning environment, promoting student success across varying abilities.

Career History

Jane gained her BA Honours Degree in English and Theatre Studies at Lancaster University followed by a PGCE at Durham University.  She lectured in Further Education for several years and has always been committed to supporting learners with additional needs and contributing to the development of an inclusive learning environment. Jane undertook further training as a dyslexia and disability specialist and obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Dyslexia and Literacy at York University.  Prior to joining Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2017, she worked at Leeds City College as Dyslexia Support Manager and Leeds Trinity University as Disability Co-ordinator.  Jane is a member of the Association of Dyslexia Specialists in Higher Education and is on their Register of Professional Quality Assured Tutors.
