Samantha trained from the age of nine in ballet with the Royal Academy of Dance in Mexico City. From the age of 15, she trained in circus and contemporary, and started professional training four years later with a focus on Cuban ballet technique, jazz, pas de deux and contemporary.
She had the opportunity to travel to Canada, Italy, Austria, the UK, Spain and the Netherlands for numerous workshops and seminars.
Samantha performed in Mexico City-based contemporary ballet company Danza Kaana for two years. She earned a three-month scholarship for an intensive with Vivo Ballet Centre in Rome. On returning to Mexico, she joined the circus/contemporary company Daqui Dealla Scenic Collaboration, and started to pursue her own artistic process.

Why did you choose to study the MA Dance & Creative Enterprise? What were the main factors that attracted you to the course and NSCD?
I felt drawn to the fact that the main aim is to find your artistic voice. In my own artistic practice, I’ve found it difficult to find individuality and express it in a piece.
What interests you as an artist? How would you describe your creative practice?
I’m interested in creating pieces that have a strong angle of social awareness, as well as visually exploring traditional elements with an innovative and futuristic twist.
How are you finding the MA? What are you currently working on?
I’ve explored the role of both choreographer and assistant choreographer by creating a piece with talented BA students, as well as assisting my classmates to do so.
Working on a proposal as Project Manager, I find it challenging to approach a project with a more methodical and subjective view, carrying research and analysis upon the realisation of a work.
I have been exploring different artistic movements and how they’ve affected dance in our time. This practice has opened my perspective of dance, performance and theatre.
How are you finding Leeds?
Leeds has surprised me with its widely diverse artistic environment. I’m quite enjoying finding everything from ballet and great theatre productions to new art galleries, poetry nights at bars and hidden gigs, alongside a welcoming dance community with fresh ideas.
